The boot is on the other foot
ACAS is now reporting 2500 new claims every month and it’s clear that employers are on a financial retreat from a barrage of unwanted extra costs.
In context, we saw a 90% increase in the first full year after ET fees were ruled illegal. This year the numbers are up again, a further 25% every month.
That’s a new claim every 17 minutes of a working week.
What will your out of office say this summer?
As the holiday season in now in full swing, here are some of our favourite out of office messages ….
“I will be out of the office and returning next week. I have incredibly easy access to a phone and email, but I assure you it will not be used for work purposes.”
“I will be out of the office from XX to XX without access to email. If this is an emergency, please call 999.”
"You are receiving his automatic notification because I am out of the office. If I was in, chances are you wouldn’t have received anything at all."
“I am on holiday from XX to XX. I will allow each sender one email. If you send me multiple emails, I will randomly delete your emails until it is pared down to one. Choose wisely. Please note that you have already sent me one email.”
1937 Insurance Letter
We thought this letter to an insurance company in 1937 was rather approproate:
Many I thank you for so charmingly making enquiries about my age? But it makes me quite bashful! Just between you and myself, I was born some time after the battle of Waterloo. Isn't it funny that I have insured my car with you for over 15 years and you are only now taking a personal interest in my welfare?
If you would like to know a few more personal details for your books, I do not mind letting you know that I do not like
b) most modern Novelists,
c) coloured finger-nails,
d) the Northcliffe and Rothermere Press,
e) Insurance Companies who make impertinent enquiries.
Any further enquiries will be gladly answered. Yours very truly . . ."

CYBER insurance - Why all businesses need it
CYBER insurance – Why all businesses need it
At Straight Solutions Ltd we think CYBER insurance is now a must for any firm.
The threats to UK businesses just keep growing, whether the cause is Eastern European state sponsored crime operating from purpose built factories, home grown hackers or the legislative burden of GDPR there is one fact you cannot avoid - our existing business insurance polices are not good enough.
Most business insurance policies were designed in the 20th century and have a gaping hole left open to 21st century digital damage.
Dixons Carphone were in the news recently for data breaches involving “5.9 million payment cards and 1.2 million personal data records” (source: bbc.co.uk)
While the technology revolution has brought with it unparalleled levels of convenience and choice to millions of people across the globe, it has done the same for the criminal underworld. It is now far easier and far more lucrative for criminals to ply their trade digitally rather than physically. Cyber attacks are the modern crime and cyber insurance is the way to protect against them.
We have just improved our restrictive covenants cover to include 'other parties' that have induced a breach, making it the widest standard cover on the market. It means that another employer who has asked someone to join them and break their employment restrictions can now be joined in the actions - making it much nore likely that the victim employer can achieve full financial compensation for the breach.
